Match fixing probe

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Today Glenn Roeder said he was “100 %” sure that the club and his players were innocent of match-fixing.

Glen said “I don’t know the exact details of what’s been said and the accusations being made about that particular game but I would be 100 per cent certain no one at Norwich City would have been involved in anything at all.”

Neil Doncaster also came out saying that he hopes the alegations are dealt with quickly.

Carrow Road, Norwich, where the match now under investigation took place

The Football Association have been pressured into launching an official investigation into alleged match-fixing, after MPs named the fixture involved.

The MPs, one of whom described himself as “profoundly shocked”, tabled parliamentary questions to Culture Secretary Andy Burnham. Last week, The Sunday Telegraph sent a document to the FA that revealed that there had been a “massive movement” in the Asian betting market in a Championship game, which the MPs have now named as Norwich City v Derby County on Oct 4th.  Derby won the game 2-1 after a calamity error by david Marshall allowed the Rams to take the lead in the dying minutes.

It was not until the intervention of North Norfolk Lib Dem MP Norman Lamb and North Norwich Labour MP Ian Gibson that the FA decided to make their inquiries official.

Seyfo Soley Hoping For Canaries Contract

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Former Preston North End midfielder Seyfo Soley has been without a club since leaving the Lilywhites in 2007, although he has had trials with the likes of Premier League club Stoke City and SPL side Motherwell.

Norwich City manager Glenn Roeder recently offered the 28-year-old Gambian the chance to earn a deal with the Canaries. Soley is hopeful that he has done enough to impress staff at the East Anglian club to ofer him a permanent deal.

“I am very proud to be on trial at Norwich City,” Soley stated.

It seems that Soley is quite confident of winning a contract, adding: “Hopefully I will convince them to give me a contract, and with the help of God and my talent it should not be a problem.”

“I am experienced enough.”

Meanwhile, midfielder David Bell, who was signed from Leicester City in the summer, made his debut in the defeat to Derby County at Carrow Road before the international break after returning from injury.

Bell admits he can not wait to get back into the thick of things again and is targeting regular first team football now he has overcome his injury problems.

With regard to the international break, Bell said: “It was very frustrating, I got my foot back in the door back from injury, I got a taste of it out on the pitch and I wanted to get some more time.”

He feels that the level of competition for places in the squad can only work in the team’s favour, commenting: “When you get competition for places it puts a bit more pressure on the players so they know they have to perform to stay in the team.”

“Sometimes when you don’t have competition you can take your foot off the gas because you know you’ll be playing next week no matter what. Competition for places definitely raises the bar for personal performances.”

“I think Croft has been in good form this season and it’s down to me to get my place back in the team and keep that.”

Probe into Norwich v Derby match-fixing

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

A Championship match between Norwich City and Derby is the fixture at the centre of a probe into irregular betting patterns in Asia which have raised concern over possible match-fixing, it emerged on Thursday.

The match on October 4 ended in a 2-1 win for Derby and the Football Association is currently examining whether the result may have been influenced by outside factors.

The match being investigated was identified after a question concerning it was tabled to Sports Minister Andy Burnham in the House of Commons, by Norman Lamb, an MP for the Norwich area.

Lamb, who was at the match, told his local radio station he was surprised the FA had not approached either Norwich City or Derby about allegations which first emerged on Sunday.“I find that extraordinary given that we were told on Sunday that the game was being investigated,” he said.

A response from Burnham is expected in the House of Commons at some point in the next week.

Derby chairman Adam Pearson has vowed to help the Football Association’s investigation into allegations of match-fixing surrounding their game against Norwich earlier this month - but hit out at the MPs who brought the matter into the public domain.

Norwich North MP Ian Gibson and Norfolk North MP Norman Lamb tabled Parliamentary questions to Culture Secretary Andy Burnham today on the subject, wanting to know whether this was the match the FA were investigating.

Lamb told the Press Association that the allegations related to unusual patterns of online betting in Asia during the course of the 4 October match at Carrow Road, which Derby won 2-1.

The FA have subsequently confirmed that is the match under investigation, but Pearson appeared unhappy that his team had been named.

Asked for his opinion on the MPs’ actions, Pearson told Sky Sports News: “I think they should be looking at events closer to home and maybe looking at crime on their own doorstep, people getting murdered in their city centres and the financial turmoil.

“They should leave football to the FA and the Football League. They have obviously got another political agenda they want to stoke up here with Norwich and unfortunately Derby are being dragged into it as well.

“But I’m sure over the coming weeks it will disappear as these stories normally do.”

He continued: “We are not concerned about it in any way and if we are asked to comply, we’ll comply.

“Obviously if the FA ask us to investigate we will take it seriously and help them all we can, but I would be amazed if there was anything irregular about this game at all.

“It’s just one of those things, large bets go on in the Far East all the time and that’s their culture, it’s not something you come across in UK football, certainly not at this club.

“An investigation holds no qualms or fears for us whatsoever. There is nothing to hide from this end, it’s just unfortunate that two people are trying to make mileage out of it for their own ends.”

The FA revealed on Saturday night they were examining documents sent to them by a newspaper concerning possible match-fixing.

It was reported that bookmakers detected a “massive movement” in bets in Asia at around half-time in a Coca-Cola Championship match.

The Sunday Telegraph sent a document to the FA and the Gambling Commission detailing the alleged unexplained betting patterns.

An FA spokesman said: “The FA can confirm that it is investigating an allegation regarding the match between Norwich City and Derby County on 4 October. We are looking into whether there is any substance to this allegation.

“There is no fixed timescale to our inquiries and there will be no further comment at this time.”

Gibson and Lamb, both Norwich supporters, are hoping for a speedy resolution to the matter.

“I am calling on the FA and the sports minister (Gerry Sutcliffe) to make an urgent statement today to confirm exactly what is known and what is happening in terms of the investigation,” said Lamb.

“I want confirmation that it is being treated with the utmost seriousness because it goes to the heart of the integrity of the game.

“None of these allegations may have any foundation, but it is deeply troubling for the clubs involved. Nobody wants a smear hanging over them. It needs to be cleared up.”

Gibson added on Sky Sports News: “This gives the minister the opportunity to look at it. Hopefully phones will be ringing and we will get some sensible statement about what they are investigating and how long it will take.

“Sport has got to be absolutely clean or you will lose public support if seen to be played by charlatans.”

Burnham refused to comment on the match-fixing probe following an appearance at the Supporters Direct conference in Westminster this afternoon.

Burnham made a 20-minute speech to an audience of 250 at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre but left immediately without answering questions from the media.

Asked about the progress of the match-fixing investigation, he replied: “I don’t really want to comment on that.”

Grounds ready to fight for his place at Boro

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Grounds has vowed to fight to keep his place in the first team.

Jonathan Grounds  The 20-year-old was recalled from a loan spell at Norwich City to play in Boro’s 1-0 win at Wigan Athletic after injuries hit the squad.

“If the manager sticks with me, hopefully I can get a few more opportunities,” Grounds told BBC Tees.

First choice left-back Andrew Taylor is now fit again after recovering from a hip injury.

Grounds graduated from Middlesbrough’s academy and made his Premier League debut against Liverpool at the Riverside last season.

He made three starts and two substitute appearances during his time at Norwich City.

“You get more maturity with being away from home and playing in a different environment. When you come back you feel a lot more confident to be able to go into the first-team,” Grounds added.
