Budding entrepreneurs are being given the chance to run their own market stall for a day for just a tenner thanks to Norwich City Council’s participation in a national ‘tables for a tenner’ initiative.
The council is providing a chance for six budding traders to run their own businesses from their very own stall on Norwich Market on Friday 29 June for a fee of just £10.
‘Tables for a tenner’ is being run as part of the national Love Your Local Market fortnight, which runs from Saturday 23 June to Sunday 8 July, and has been singled out for support by secretary of state for communities and local government the Rt Hon Eric Pickles.
Deputy leader and cabinet member with responsibility for resources and Norwich Market, councillor Alan Waters said: “This is a unique chance to get an insight into running a market stall and experience what it’s really like.
“A stall for a day for only £10 is an excellent opportunity for any small or new business – in a bustling central location, with potential to attract new customers.”
Mr Pickles said: “Markets play an important role in the social and economic life of an area and are an important part of the retail mix that can bring energy and people into our town centres.
“They can increase healthy competition and choice and provide an unrivalled platform for micro-businesses and start-ups.”
Norwich is a top 10 retail destination in the UK because it offers such a great mix of shopping experiences. Norwich Market, one-off markets and the wide-range of independent shops and national chains all work to increase the city’s vitality and attraction.
The opportunity to run a stall for a day will offer an insight into what it’s like to be part of the historic market, selling your own goods from one of the many stalls. It also highlights and promotes the unique shopping experience offered by the market.
The six stalls are available on a first-come first-served basis. Applications are invited for retail but not food stalls, as these are already well represented on the market.
To apply contact the market manager, Ian Patterson by email: ianpatterson@norwich.gov.uk or telephone 01603 213537
Note:
Existing Norwich market stall holders will all be given a £10 credit.
More than 200 markets across the country are anticipated to be taking part in Love Your Local Market fortnight with a range of initiatives including music events, gardening workshops, fashion shows, kids activities and auctions.
